			According to the occultist Rudolf Steiner, Christian Rosicrucian lived in the 13th century. At that time, the spiritual world was closed for a time even to the initiated. At that time, Christianity entered the golden age of scholasticism with Thomas Aquinas. Understanding Christianity was no longer possible through mysticism, it was sought in the abundant philosophy of Antiquity, notably in Aristotle. It was in this context of spiritual night that a community of twelve initiated brothers gathered. They carried within them all the knowledge acquired since the ancient and mythical eras through which humanity would have passed until today. This community was formed around Rosenkreutz.

			These twelve brothers, aware of the greatness of Christianity, initiated Rosenkreutz who thus united in himself the twelve currents of wisdom of which they were the bearers.

			The initiation completely transformed his soul. In her lived a rebirth of these twelve wisdoms revived by Christ. It was an illuminating experience analogous to that of Paul of Tarsus.

			Rosenkreuz died shortly after. From the occult point of view, says Steiner, the fruit of the initiation of the thirteenth was preserved in the spiritual atmosphere of the Earth, as a subsisting element of the etheric body. This etheric aura overshadowed and inspired the twelve, as well as their disciples, who then gave birth to the occult current of the Rose-Croix.

			As for this etheric body, it continued to act, and it penetrated into the etheric body of the thirteenth when he reincarnated towards the middle of the fourteenth century. Christian Rose-Croix then lived more than a hundred years. He was of German nationality, hence his German name "Rosenkreutz". He was raised in the circle of the disciples and successors of the twelve.

			At the age of twenty-eight he travelled and left Europe. He went first to Damascus, and repeated the illuminating experience of Paul of Tarsus, because the forces of the etheric body of the individuality of the 13th century had retained all their vigour. It was only from this incarnation that he was called Christian Rosicrucian. Although from an esoteric point of view, in the occult sense he was already Christian Rosicrucian in the 13th century. It is his disciples, the successors of the twelve of the 13th century, who are the Rosicrucians.

			Christian Rosicrucian then travelled all over the known world. After having received the wisdom of the twelve fertilised by the being of Christ, it was easy for him to assimilate in the space of seven years all the science of his time.

			After seven years he returned to Europe and took as his pupils the most advanced of the disciples and successors of the twelve and he then inaugurated the true work of the Rosicrucians. In 1785, the Rosicrucian revelations were published in The Secret Figures of the Rosicrucians. This document provides some brief indications of the Rosicrucian activity during the preceding hundred years. A hundred years later, Rosicrucian action was expressed again in the works of Helena Blavatsky, especially in Isis Unveiled published in 1877.
